Thanks to a generous sponsorship by Vancouver Clinic, Volunteer Connections is once again able to produce a much-anticipated event: The free admission Senior Wellness Connections Expo, presented by Vancouver Clinic and Volunteer Connections, is Saturday September 15, from 10:00 a.m. till 4:00 p.m. in the Cowlitz Balroom a ilani.
This event supports continuing operations of Volunteer Connections, a program of the nonprofit Human Services Council. “We took a year off in 2017 to evaluate the event,” says Program Director Marcia Hale. “To continue the Expo we needed to make sure we were enhancing our bottom line. With the support of Vancouver Clinic, it’s possible to meet our financial goals and bring this event back to Clark County!”
The Senior Expo has been a mainstay of Volunteer Connections for 20 years bringing together businesses and organizations offering goods and services to people fifty and over. Vancouver Clinic will be presenting several educational seminars throughout the day on various topics including new developments in arthritis treatment, heart healthy cooking, and more. Additional sponsors this year include USA River Cruises offering a grand prize of an “Autumn in the Pacific Northwest” cruise aboard the American Empress and ilani Resort providing $10.00 promo cards to the first 500 attendees.
Regence Blue Cross, Humana MarketPoint Inc, Human Services Council, The Messenger, Hargrove Financial, and Health Care Options Northwest, Elfin Services, and United Healthcare are also sponsors of the event and will be on hand at the Expo with information on their services and programs.
A number of nonprofit partners of Volunteer Connections will share information about ways to become involved with their missions as volunteers or supporting an upcoming event. “At the heart of the Expo is providing people a way to connect to volunteer opportunities in our communities,” says Hale. “We hope people will learn about a need in the community and be inspired to either volunteer or contribute in some way to that nonprofit mission.”
Volunteer Connections is the Clark County home of the Corporation for National and Community Service Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) for people 55 and over. For over 40 years RSVP volunteers have been “getting things done” across the US in areas of high community need including supporting area food banks, schools, disaster preparedness, veterans, and capacity building such as supporting thrift shops and blood banks. Locally over 220 people serve RSVP needs in 28 nonprofits. Over 600 people ages 14 and up volunteered in another 60 nonprofits through the Volunteer Center of Volunteer Connections. In 2017 RSVP and Volunteer Center referred volunteers contributed over 63,000 hours of service in just under 100 partner nonprofits. Those volunteer hours equal over 1.8 Million dollars of support in our communities.
The ilani Resort and Casino venue is located on 156 acres of Cowlitz Tribal land near Ridgefield/LaCenter about 16 miles north of Vancouver with direct access off Interstate 5 at exit 16. There is abundant free parking with a free shuttle bringing patrons to the entry doors, or valet parking. There is no admission charge to attend the Expo event, but a suggested $5.00 donation at the door helps support Volunteer Connections.
